Haunted Mansion Stretching Room Ceiling - courtesy darthmaz314.com
Any “foolish mortals” that have visited the mansion know that their first stop after walking through the interactive queue is the so-called “stretching room.” There, “bodies” are asked by the morbidly dreary Mansion employee cast members to stand in the “dead center” of the room, away from the walls just before they are sealed in the octagonal shaped chamber. They are then greeted by the infamous ghost host, legendary voice actor Paul Frees, who points out not only the portraits that adorn the walls of chamber, but the very ominous and uniquely strange feature of the room that they currently occupy…it is “stretching” before their very eyes. Or is it?Another frightening feature of the room, as pointed out by your humble disembodied host, is that it has no windows and no doors. The challenge then presented to the “bodies” occupying the room is to “find a way out!”
Finally, the host and narrator generously suggests that there is always “his way out,” a line punctuated by a crash of lightning and a snuffing out of the room’s already dim lighting, forcing all to look up to the ceiling (pictured above,) which has disappeared completely and been replaced by a skeletal figure hanging from a noose high above their heads. A blood-curdling scream accompanied by a thunderous crash yanks the occupants of the stretching room back into a more familiar reality as the lights and the ceiling return to view and guests are then herded toward the attractions loading area.
The stretching room is only part of the now legendary Haunted Mansion, which has a presence at every Disney park worldwide. For the complete stretching room experience, check out the video in our next post.
